The city of Rhodes (Greek Rodos Ρόδος ( f sg ), Ottoman until 1912 Rodos, Rodi Italian 1912-1947 ) is located at the northern tip of the Greek island of Rhodes. She has been the administrative reform in 2010 the administrative seat of the Municipality of Rhodes ( Dimos Rodou Δήμος Ρόδου ), where it forms the eponymous district of Rhodes ( Dimotiki Enotita Rodou Δημοτική Ενότητα Ρόδου ). In 2011, the city had 50,636 inhabitants.

Old town

The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, is partly on a hill and is surrounded by a four kilometer long fortified wall that extends to the harbor. At the highest point of the old town, the Grand Master Palace of the Knights is ( 1937-1940 built by the Italians again), which now houses a museum, which displays in the Roman and Greek sculptures and numerous mosaics, after under the Italian occupation their way from Kos Rhodes found. The touristy Socrates Street ( Odos Sokratous ) connects the Suleyman Pasha Mosque with the platia Ippokratu. Opposite the mosque there is the Turkish library. At the platia Ippokratu, in the middle of which an owl fountain, borders the place of the Jewish martyrs with Seahorse Fountain. Southwest of the Sokratous the Turks district has narrow streets, mosques, small squares and a Turkish bath.

Traffic

From Rhodes town from numerous bus connections on the island. Waterway consists of the islands of Symi and Tilos, as well as to the Turkish mainland.
