Rhondda Cynon Taf

Rhondda Cynon Taf is a Principal Area with the status of a county borough in south Wales.

The County Borough is bordered to the east by Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly, south to Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, on the west by Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot and Powys to the north. The main towns are Aberdare, Mountain Ash and Pontypridd. Rhondda Cynon Taf default population is second all Welsh counties.

History

The county borough was on 1 April 1996 by a merger of the District Cynon Valley, Rhondda and Taff Ely - ( excluding the municipalities of Creigiau and Pentyrch who came to Cardiff ) formed the then defunct administrative county Mid Glamorgan.

Economy

The region, despite the closure of many mines still the heartland of the Welsh coal mining. She is also a center of the British steel industry. With the decline of these two main industries tried the regional government to attract other industry and especially service companies.

Others

Ferndale and other places in Rhondda Cynon Taf served as locations for the exterior shots of the TV series Stella by and starring Ruth Jones. The series takes place in the fictional Welsh town of " Pontyberry ".
