Ričardas Berankis ( born June 21, 1990 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian tennis player.

Life and career

2005-2007: Success as a junior and first experiences on Futures tournaments

Ričardas Berankis started at the age of two years with the tennis games. From 2005 he played on the junior tour, and there could soon celebrate tournament victories. His greatest achievements were winning the 2007 U.S. Open and reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2007 and the Wimbledon Championships 2007. He finished the 2007 to position 1 of the junior world rankings.

Back in 2006, collected Berankis also experiences on Futures tournaments in the adult area. In March 2007, he first won a Futures tournament in Portugal. In May 2007 he was appointed to the Lithuanian Davis Cup team, and won three of six games there. Later in the year Berankis still reached a Future semi-final, and ended the year ranked 707 of world tennis rankings.

2008-2009: Achievements and ATP Challenger debut

In 2008 Ričardas Berankis played increasingly tournaments in the ATP Challenger Tour. In June 2008, Berankis qualified for the main draw of an ATP tournament in Warsaw for the first time. Although he was eliminated in the first round against Wayne Odesnik, he was then performed as a first Lithuanians at all in the top 500 in the world rankings in July 2008 (previous record holder in his country was Rolandas Muraška, who made it in 2001 at No. 575 ). For the ATP tournament in Umag, he got a wild card, but lost in the first round against Fabio Fognini. As the winner of last year's junior competition Berankis got for qualification to the 2008 U.S. Open a wildcard, and made it after a victory over the top -100 player Serhiy Stachowskyj in the third qualifying round, where he narrowly failed to Björn Phau.

The year 2009 began with a Berankis finals in a Futures tournament in Germany. In March 2009, he drove a 3-2 victory over Georgia in the Davis Cup victories in two single, but was then in July 2009 against Slovenia, as well as a chance his team, which lost 0:5. Later in the year Berankis reached in Qarshi and Champaign twice the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament, he was also in two other Future - finals.

2010: Two Challenger titles and entry into the Top 100

There, however, he failed in the third qualifying round to Martin Fischer. Of this he was not discouraged, but won a week later in Nottingham by defeating Gō Soeda his first Challenger title. At Wimbledon, he then succeeded on the third attempt for the first time qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament, and reached by a victory over Carsten Ball even the second round. There, however, he lost in four sets against the set at position 22 Feliciano Lopez. In August 2010 Berankis reached in Vancouver for the second time the finals of a Challenger tournament, defeated Dudi Sela but there. After he had again successfully qualified at the U.S. Open in 2010 for a Grand Slam tournament, he defeated Ryan Sweeting in the first round. In the second round he met on the set at position 13 Jurgen Melzer, whom he defeated in a tight match in five sets. A week after the U.S. Open, Berankis came with Lithuania in Davis Cup relegation match for a place in the Europe / Africa Group I. He won a single and a double, but could not prevent the 2:3 defeat to Slovenia. 2011: establishment on the ATP Tour and injury worries

The year 2011 began for Ričardas Berankis with the successful qualification for the ATP tournament in Brisbane. Even with his Australian Open debut Berankis was able to move into the second round with a three-set victory over local favorite Marinko Matosevic. Next, he won a contested three- set match against Donald Young, and achieved thereby, as last year the quarter-finals. He lost, however, in two tight sets against the eventual tournament winner Milos Raonic. Berankis different even for the next ATP tournaments in Memphis and Delray Beach each in the first round against the eventual tournament winner Andy Roddick and Juan Martín del Potro. In the subsequent Davis Cup match against Estonia Berankis despite second individual victories not prevent the 2:3 defeat against the Estonians. After he had retired at the Masters Series in Indian Wells and Miami in the second or first round, Ričardas Berankis had to take a long injury lay-off due to a groin problem. Thus he missed both the French Open and Wimbledon. After nearly four months out Berankis was in July 2011 in Atlanta his comeback. In some he left in the first round, in a double but he was able to reach the semi-finals along with Xavier Malisse.
