Richard Franck ( born January 3, 1858 in Cologne, † January 22, 1938 in Heidelberg ) was a German composer and pianist.

Life

Richard Franck is the son of composer Eduard Franck and pianist Tony Franck born Thiedemann.

After graduating from the grammar school in Berlin Richard Franck studied music in Berlin at the Stern Conservatory, then at the Leipzig Conservatory under Carl Reinecke, Ernst Ferdinand Wenzel, Salomon Jadassohn, Alfred Richter and Wilhelm Rust, besides philosophy at the university. In 1880 he was appointed to the run by Hans Huber General School of Music in Basel, after which he worked in Berlin ( Kullaksche Academy ) and in Magdeburg, then again in Basel as a teacher, conductor and composer. As of 1903, Franck Royal Prussian music director in Kassel, finally worked from 1910 to 1938 at the Conservatory in Heidelberg.

As a composer, Richard Franck used equally small (numerous piano pieces ) as the major forms. Mention may be made about the Piano Trios Op 20 and Op 32, Violin and Cello Sonatas and the overture " waves of the sea and of love" in 1895 by Willem Mengelberg in Lucerne listed first op 21, with which Richard Franck had great success. Characteristic are elegant lines, harmonious differentiation and a penchant for contrapuntal Bays. Everywhere can be seen in the works of Franck's an educated of classic patterns, then "moderate modern " style felt connected to the Romantics. After the First World War he was interested in Grieg and regersche harmony. Similar to Max Reger was recognized with him previously facets, pointing to the epochal upheaval. Grace and harmony, subtle sound stimulus and elegant melody spoke to him the criticism alike. As a concert pianist Richard Franck was accused of an amazing technology in the broadest and highest sense, in terms of dexterity, elasticity of the attack, emphasis and interpretation of the musical idea content. Already the first publications for the piano had sympathy and recognition earned him where did not mention that they demanded an excellent player. Before unusual shapes he did not shrink: he created a two-movement Violin Concerto (Op. 43), for its special status as idiosyncratic structure, only one ( younger ) Pendant from the pen of Siegfried Wagner is known, and in addition to the Piano Quartet Op 33, a "Piano Quartet in a sentence " (op. 41). Quite a few of his musical and philosophical ideas and motifs go back to the humanistic orientation Franck, recognizable at about the allusive to the ancient tale subtitle "Cupid and Psyche" love idyll, Op 40 ( tone poem for large orchestra).
