Riesenberg (Ore Mountains)

BWf1

Location

The mountain is located west of the forest road between Sosa and the village of Steinbach of Johann George city and is overlooked by Auersberg. Not far away are the Riesenberger houses with a tourist restaurant.

The giant mountain is one of the most important heights in the Saxon Obererzgebirge in the previous reign Schwarzenberg. At the foot of the giant mountain the Small Bockau and Sosaer stream flow.

On the top of the Giant mountain there are two detached, formed of superposed blocks of granite rocks, which represent in the distance like ruins of an old castle. Similar masses of granite, such as beds stacked, can also be found on the way from Breitenhof by Johann George Town, at the black water, called the yeast dumplings.

Origin of the name

As the non- lower Riesenberg has this name, but it should probably lead the neighboring Auersberg get, is difficult to decide; maybe he was earlier expected to Berge, and this led both names - and perhaps owes the exclusive designation of the lower summit with the name of the giant mountain to chance their origin.

Mining

On Riesenberg has continually driven a handsome iron stone mining; at the beginning of the 19th century operation is a union mine, the deep Riesenberger Erbstolln, where, however, the 1819 Kux was prized only five dollars, and three self- Lehner mines, namely the Prince of Peace and Ostlamm treasure trove ( Kuxtaxe 20 pounds), Urbanus and iron goose, and four journeymen including Tannenbaum treasure trove ( Kuxtaxe 25 pounds). However, one can do well consider the abutting in East Graupenberg than one stage of the giant mountain, and thus also the society Stolln ( Kuxtaxe 10 pounds) to move here.

West of the giant mountain stood still until the end of the 19th century, the Auersberger homes that have emerged from hat and colliery houses.

Others

In the eighties of the 20th century fell on the giant mountain from a Soviet fighter aircraft.
