Rimavská Baňa

Rimavská Bana (Hungarian Rimabánya ) is a municipality in the south- central Slovakia, with 544 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2011) and is located in Okres Rimavská Sobota, kraj a circle of Banskobystrický.

Geography

The municipality is located in the upper valley of the river Rimava at the confluence with the right bank Rimavica and is located in the mountains Revúcka Highlands, a subunit of the Slovak Ore Mountains. The center is located at an altitude of 275 m nm, while the " mountain" Sinec (917 m nm) rises north- west of the town. Rimavská Bana is seven kilometers from Hnúšťa and 17 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota.

History

Rimavská Bana was probably in the 12th century and was first mentioned in 1270 as Bana writing. The name refers to the former mining activity. Until 1334 the archbishop of Kalocsa place, then in the 15th century belonged to the manor of Castle Hajnáčka and in modern times various landowners. In the 19th century an iron ore mine and an iron works were active. 1828 are listed 68 houses and 486 inhabitants. After 1918, the main source of income of the inhabitants is agriculture.
