Ringo Lam

Ringo Lam ( born 1955 in Hong Kong as Ringo Lam Ling Tung ) is a Chinese film director and screenwriter.

His film career started as an actor. In 1973, he took a one-year acting class, where he met his future friend and companion Chow Yun -Fat.

After working as a production assistant and producer for television a few years, he went to Canada in 1978 and studied film there. In 1981, he was then encouraged by Chow Yun -Fat to return to Hong Kong. There he got through the help of producer and director Tsui Hark 1983, directed his first film, Esprit d' Amour ( Yam yeung choh ) transmitted.

In 1985 he turned City on Fire starring Chow Yun -Fat and Danny Lee. City on Fire is an undercover cop film, which - together with A Better Tomorrow by John Woo - set new standards in Hong Kong action cinema. The end of City on Fire also inspired Quentin Tarantino screenplay for his award-winning debut film Reservoir Dogs, who even took some scenes almost detail.

It was followed by two successful sequels - Prison on Fire School on Fire, which portrayed the former conditions in prisons and schools. Other films that turned Lam in Hong Kong before he went to the U.S., were Double Dragon with Jackie Chan and Full Contact, again with his friend Chow Yun -Fat.

In 1996 he made his first film with Maximum Risk in the United States. The main role was played here Jean -Claude Van Damme. Also with Van Damme, he turned his other two American films, and Replicant In Hell. In between, he always returned to Hong Kong to there as well to produce more films and to turn.
