Rinspeed sQuba

The Rinspeed sQuba is a concept vehicle of the Swiss creative powerhouse Rinspeed and was manufactured in esoro.

The Swiss developer Frank Rinderknecht presented this study at the Geneva Motor Show 2008. The vehicle drives like an ordinary two-seater over the country, but can easily dive into the water. Here it moves with a fitted with two propellers drive away, and two jet streams next to the doors. The waterproof, but open body ( convertible) prevents the penetration of water into the various assemblies. The occupant are supplied via ventilator with oxygen from compressed air cylinders, which are sufficient for about 2 hours. The total residence time of the vehicle combination under water is max. five hours. The underwater speed is three km / h on land 120 km / h The propulsion is determined with two pedals and the maximum depth is ten meters.

Frank Rinderknecht:

"For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible, then, to build a fully functional car for the underwater flight. Now we have made this dream come true. "

Technical Equipment

The vehicle is based on the Lotus Elise. The body was completely sealed and covered with styrofoam, so that the static lift sufficient for swimming. That is, without occupants, the car floats on the water surface by itself. The vehicle has three electric motors and is emission-free. The 3.6 kW nozzles provide for diving under water. For the propulsion propellers provide two at the rear. Is steered by the different propulsion of both propellers. The electronics are kept dry by compressed air. On the road, the scooter operates with 160 Nm of an electric motor. The power supplied by rechargeable Lithium - ion battery.

The body surface area was aerodynamically equipped with 3D - film material with shark skin embossing. It is salt water, that is, seawater resistant and is therefore suitable for use in the sea. The chassis for land transport is a stainless coil-over suspension from KW automotive, which was fitted with wide tires from Pirelli.

On the concept study, the following companies were involved: AEZ, Carl F. Bucherer, Foliatec.com, Konrad Hornschuch AG, HS ion GmbH, KGS Diamond Group, KW automotive GmbH, LeasePlan ( Switzerland ) AG, among others
