Rioz

Rioz is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté. It is the capital of the canton in the arrondissement of Vesoul Rioz and administrative seat of the municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais.

Geography

Rioz situated at an altitude of 264 m above sea level, about halfway between Vesoul and Besançon, 21 km north- northeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the south of the department, on the plateau north of the river valley Ognon on the upper Buthiers, between the vast forest areas Forêt de Sorans in the west and Grands Bois in the Northeast.

The area of ​​17.20 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of the south and Ognon Saône in the northwest. The central part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Rioz, which is on average 280 m. It consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly layers of the upper Jurassic period. The plateau is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land. It is drained by the Buthiers, which rises north-east of the village, south to Ognon. The creek is dammed north of the village to two fish ponds.

To the west, the municipality's area extends into the woods of the Bois de la Hye, Bois de la Charrière ( to 365 m) and Forêt de Sorans. To the north a narrow tip extends over a gently rising slope up to the height of the Bois des Rêpes, on the 402 m, the highest elevation of Rioz is achieved. East of Rioz are the forested areas of the Bois d' Anthon. The settlements Anthon and Dournon together form an enclave that includes a basin at the southern edge of the Grands Bois.

History

Remains of a Gallo- Roman villa and various findings indicate that the municipality of Rioz was inhabited very early. In the Middle Ages Rioz belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government was responsible for the Barony of Fondremand. During the Thirty Years' War Rioz has been greatly affected. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

To a field change occurred in 1807, when the previously independent municipalities Anthon (1806: 143 inhabitants) and Dournon (1806: 69 inhabitants ) were incorporated to Rioz. In the 19th century Rioz gained national significance due to its earthenware factory. With the incorporation of Les Fontenis (1968: 39 inhabitants ) was completed in 1973 an additional area change. Attractions

The village church of Rioz was rebuilt in the 18th century. Your tower carries the typical Franche -Comté hood. Population

With 1926 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Rioz one of the smaller towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 1,100 people were still counted ), a population increase was recorded in a first phase at the beginning of the 1970s. Culture

Known beyond the region is the Carnival of Rioz, which takes place at the beginning of April.
