Robert of Torigni

Robert of Torigni or Thorigny (* 1110 in Torigni -sur- Vire, † June 24, 1186 ) is a Norman chronicler.

Life

He joined in 1128 as a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Notre Dame du Bec and became in 1149 the Prior in 1154, he was elected abbot of Mont -Saint -Michel.

Robert of Torigni read religious works as well as profane. Both as prior as abbot as he was stronger the secular world connected as Orderic Vitalis and William of Jumièges, the two authors of the Gesta Normannorum Ducum. Roberts first major work was the revision of the Gesta of the year 1139th He is the author of the chronicle of Sigebert of attachments Gembloux, which covers the years 385-1100. The Gesta Normannorum Ducum reported following the Chronicle Sigeberts over the years 1100 to 1186, and is of particular interest for the years 1154 to 1170.
