Roberto González Nieves

Roberto Octavio González Nieves, OFM ( born June 2, 1950 in Elizabeth ) is an American priest and Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico.

Life

Roberto Octavio González Nieves joined the Congregation of the Franciscan, put the profession on August 25, 1973, the former bishop of San Miguel, Lorenzo Michele Joseph Graziano, OFM, ordained him a priest on May 8, 1977.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on July 19, 1988 Auxiliary Bishop of Boston and Titular Bishop of Ursona. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Boston, Bernard Francis Cardinal Law, on 3 October of the same year; Co-consecrators were John Joseph Cardinal O'Connor, Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez and, Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico.

As a motto he chose Vita by Jesus. On 16 May 1995 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Corpus Christi, and introduced into the office on 26 June of the same year. Following the resignation of René Henry Gracidas he followed him on 1 April 1997 by the Bishop of Corpus Christi. On 26 March 1999 he was appointed Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico, and introduced into the office on 8 May of the same year.
