Romain (Doubs)

Romain, also called Romain- la -Roche, is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Romain is on 352 m, 10 km north of Baume- les -Dames and about 35 km northeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the rolling countryside between the river valleys of the Doubs River in the south and Ognon in the north, to an inclined westward slope above the valley basin of the Crenu at the foot of the plateau of the Bois du Valbertuy.

The area of ​​4.85 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the undulating countryside between Doubs and Ognon. The western part of the area occupied by the basin of the Crenu (inflow of Ognon ), which is on average 310 m. It is mainly passed with arable and meadow land. To the east runs a 100 m high terrain on stage to a low-water, karstic plateau, which lies at about 430 m and mainly covered by forest ( Bois du Valbertuy ). With 458 m find the highest mountains of Romain is achieved. Among the various karst phenomena among several caves ( including the Grotte du Crotot ) and sinkholes.

Neighboring communities of Romain are Gouhelans and Gondenans -les -Moulins in the north, Fontenelle - Montby in the east, the south and Mésandans Huanne -Mont Martin in the West.

History

Romain was first documented in the year 1134. Since that time it formed a parish. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the first rule Granges, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century, and from the 16th century to the dominions Soye and Goudenans -les -Moulins. Together with the Franche-Comté came Romain with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. From 1680 the new village was built, the downhill and was no longer a little further right under the rocks. In 1922 the church was officially temporarily Romain- la- Roche. Today Romain is part of the municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Rougemont.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Jean- l'Evangéliste was built from 1762 to 1774 in the classical style. A little above the village there is a chapel. In the village, many houses have been preserved in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Population

With 108 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Romain is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 261 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Romain was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It is located below the main road D50, which runs from Baume- les -Dames to Villers Exel. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 7 km. Further road links exist with Gouhelans and Fontenelle - Montby.
