Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg

The Archdiocese of Johannesburg (Latin: Archidioecesis Ioannesburgensis ) is a location in South Africa, diocese of the Roman Catholic church located in Johannesburg ( Gauteng ).

History

1886 by Pope Leo XIII. the Apostolic Prefecture Transvaal founded. Pius X raised this in 1904 the Vicariate Apostolic of Transvaal ( " Transvaallensis " ), Pius XII. this was renamed in 1948 as Apostolic Vicariate of Johannesburg ( " Ioannesburgensis " ) around.

The Archdiocese of Johannesburg, January 11, 1951 with the reorganization of the church hierarchy in South Africa by Pope Pius XII. founded. Johannesburg Metropolitan seat. First archbishop was William Patrick Whelan OMI.

The Archdiocese of Johannesburg are associated with the suffragan Klerksdorp, Manzini and Witbank.
