Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela

The Archdiocese of Messina - Lipari - Santa Lucia del Mela (Latin: Archidioecesis Messanensis - Liparensis - Sanctae luciae, Italian: Arcidiocesi di Messina - Lipari - Santa Lucia del Mela ) is a location in Sicily Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy based in Messina.

It is the metropolitan diocese of the Ecclesiastical Province of Messina in the Sicily region church; its suffragan dioceses are the Diocese of Nicosia and the Diocese of Patti.

History

According to tradition, a bishop named Bacchilus in the 1st century to have been the first bishop of Messina. The first writing traditional name of a bishop of Messina is Eucarpus (502). In later councils bishops are mentioned by Messina as a participant, eg Gaudiosus 787 at the Second Council of Nicaea in 868, and Gregory the Fourth Council of Constantinople Opel.

After the Arab domination of Roger I. erected in 1081 in Troina a new diocese, whose seat was transferred in 1096 to Messina. First bishop of the newly erected diocese was Robert.

1131 Diocese of Messina was charged by the anti-pope Anacletus II to an archbishopric and Metropolitan seat. As suffragan it received the bishopric of Catania and built in the same year dioceses Cefalù and Lipari - Patti. This survey was initially not recognized by Rome and until 1166 by Pope Alexander III. completed again.

Also in 1131 the Archimandritat San Salvatore was established, which included a group of Byzantine monasteries. 1635 was built by Pope Urban VIII as a diocese.

In the 19th century the dioceses were Cefalù (1817 ) and Nicosia (1844 ) built from parts of the territory of the Archdiocese of Messina, and another part was transferred to the Diocese of Patti (1827 ). 1883 Archimandritat San Salvatore was united with the Archdiocese of Messina.

On September 30, 1986, the Archdiocese of Messina - Lipari - Santa Lucia del Mela was formed by the Archdiocese of Messina, the Diocese of Lipari and the Prelature of Santa Lucia del Mela were merged.
