Santa Lucia del Mela

Santa Lucia del Mela is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 4709 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Santa Lucia del Mela is located 38 km west of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Casalvecchio Siculo, Castro Reale, Fiumedinisi, Furci Siculo, Gualtieri Sicaminò, Mandanici, Merì, Pace del Mela, Pagliara, San Filippo del Mela and San Pier Niceto.

History

The Casale Sancte Lucie is first mentioned in 1188 as a possession of the Bishop of Patti, in a diploma of King William II, in which the settlement of disputes between bishop Stephen and the royal chaplain master Benedict will be certified. After temporary alienation, it was 1249/1250 the bishop Philip of Patti refunded.

Structures

The former castle situated on the highest point of the village, has since been used as a seminary of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Messina - Lipari - Santa Lucia del Mela and is now a monastery with Marian shrine.
