Savoca

Savoca is a municipality in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 1755 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Savoca located 39 km southwest of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture (citrus, olive and fruit).

The neighboring municipalities are Casalvecchio Siculo, Forza d'Agro, Furci Siculo Sant'Alessio Siculo and Santa Teresa di Riva.

History

In the 12th century ( in 1132 by Ruggero II) a Norman settlement was established here. The village of Savoca has been known since 1415. The town's name is derived from sambuchi, the black elderberry.

  • Church of Maria SS Assunta, the parish church built in 1500, from here you have a beautiful view of the coast and the sea
  • St.Nicolò church from the 16th century, the church is also called Santa Lucia

Culture

Savoca was the filming location for several scenes of the movie trilogy The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola with Marlon Brando in the lead role of godparents.
