Tripi

Tripi is a small municipality in the province of Messina, in the autonomous region of Sicily in Italy with 921 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Tripi located 70 km west of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Basicò, Falcone, Francavilla di Sicilia, Furnari, Mazzarrà Sant'Andrea, Montalbano Elicona and Novara di Sicilia.

History

Near the present site was located in the ancient city originally Sicel Abacaenum (or Abakainon / Ἀβάκαινον ), which came under Greek cultural influence. As Syracuse grew and Tyndaris was founded 396 BC, the city lost dramatically in importance, but there was continued at least until the Roman Imperial period. In the Middle Ages Tripi stretched around the castle, which has been preserved as a ruin.
