Malfa

Malfa is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 995 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Malfa on the north coast of the Aeolian island of Salina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and summer tourism. More jobs are available in the fishery.

Salina can be reached by ferries and hydrofoils from Milazzo Messina or the port to Santa Marina Salina. In the summer time there are also links to Cefalù, Naples and Vibo Valentia.

The municipality consists of the villages of Malfa and Pollara, and the small neighboring island Scoglio Faraglione. The neighboring municipalities on the island of Salina are Leni (southwest) and Santa Marina Salina (southeast).

History

The island of Salina Malfa and hence the place was inhabited in prehistoric times. The name Malfa is derived from the former trade relations with the Amalfi coast.

More information

Since 1991 takes place the first weekend in June, the " Sagra del cappero " pirating hard instead. Traveling To kick off agricultural experts from Palermo and Rome, to share experiences about capers breeding and quality. It follows a two-day festival, is carried at the original costumes and danced to traditional music and singing.

1994 turned Michael Radford Pollara in the film The Postman.
