Roccella Valdemone

Roccella Valdemone is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 693 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Roccella Valdemone is located 88 km southwest of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture. A typical product of Roccella Valdemone are different types of cheese.

The neighboring municipalities are Castiglione di Sicilia ( CT), Malvagna, Mojo Alcantara, Montalbano Elicona Randazzo (CT) and Santa Domenica Vittoria.

History

The village was founded in the Middle Ages. The last Lacedaemonians ( hence the name ) fled the beginning of the 10th century from the Peloponnese ( from the invading Slavs ) here to the former ( Magna Graecia ) compatriots - their real goal Taranto would it might have been; but their traces are lost soon definitively (see Val Demone ). The place was in 1296, the fief of the Spadafora family.
