Giardini-Naxos
Giardini Naxos Giardini or short is a town of the province of Messina on the Mediterranean island of Sicily with 9315 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).
Location and data
Giardini Naxos is located approximately 50 km south of Messina and 40 km north of Catania on the east coast of Sicily. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and tourism. Giardini Naxos, a seaside resort.
The neighboring municipalities are Calatabiano (CT) and Taormina.
The city has connection to the A18 Messina - Catania. The town has a railway station on the railway line Messina - Siracusa, the nearest Fontana Rossa airport is in Catania.
History
Giardini Naxos is located on the site of the ancient Naxos. Naxos was the first Greek colony in Sicily. It was founded in 735 BC by the inhabitants of the town of Chalkis.
From Naxos from other towns were founded, in 730 BC Catana and Leontinoi and probably 728 BC Messina. Later Naxos was subjugated by Hippocrates of Gela and slapped in 415 BC on the side of Athens. After the destruction of the city in 403 BC by Dionysius I the inhabitants sought refuge in Tauromenion.
Buildings and parks
The Church of Maria SS Raccomandata dates from the 18th century. The archaeological museum and an archaeological park with excavations and finds of ancient Naxos, as well as the remains of a temple to Aphrodite and a city wall located on the seafront in the resort.
