Gaggi

Gaggi is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 3143 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Gaggi is 59 km southwest of Messina in the lower valley of the river Alcantara. The distance to Taormina is 15 km. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture. Crops are olives, grapes and wheat.

Gaggi is about 6 km from the A18 / E45 motorway, exit Giardini Naxos, removed. Direction Francavilla, you can visit Gaggi from the Alcantara Gorges. Unlike many other mountain villages of Sicily Gaggi is a growing city with several new housing estates.

The neighboring municipalities are Castelmola, Castiglione di Sicilia ( CT), Graniti, Mongiuffi Melia and Taormina.

History

During the Roman period the area around Gaggi was uninhabited. In the year 902 the area was conquered and colonized by the Arabs. 1078 conquered Conte Ruggero D' Altavilla the place and gave it to the monastery of Savoca. 1639 conquered Giuseppe Barrile, later Baron of Melia and Marchese, the small town. In 1820, Gaggi became independent from Taormina.
