Caronia

Caronia is a municipality in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 3448 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Carania is located 122 km west of Messina on the northern coast of Sicily. The place is named the mountains in südnebrodischen Mountains, the Monte delle Caronie. Here is the largest forest of Sicily. Main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture. In addition, cement and cork is still in production.

History

At the feast of St. Biagio, a statue of the saint is draped with almond biscuits. The faithful go barefoot behind the statue through the town.
