Motta Camastra

Motta Camastra is a municipality in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 864 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Motta Camastra is located 66 km southwest of Messina. The main occupation of the inhabitants are agriculture and cattle breeding.

The neighboring municipalities are Antillo, Castiglione di Sicilia ( CT), Francavilla di Sicilia and Graniti.

History

Since the end of the 12th century is here the farm Camastra. The town was founded in the 14th century by the family Linguida. Since then, various feudal lords owned the village until 1560 the Sardo family, then the Lanza family.

Attractions

The town lies above the Alcantaratals.

In the city

  • Parish Church of San Michele from the 14th century, inside two marble statues from the 17th century
  • Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata from the 16th century, inside a bell from 1517

Outside the city

  • Gole Alcantara, the gorges of the river Alcantara. The municipal area is located just south of Motta Camastra of the most impressive gorges in places is 50 m deep and 5 m wide.
