Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nagpur

The Archdiocese of Nagpur (Latin: Archidioecesis Nagpurensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Nagpur.

History

The Diocese of Nagpur was on July 11, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. built out of territory of the diocese Vizagapatam. It was the Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore, is a suffragan. On 18 July 1932, the Diocese of Nagpur was from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Jubbulpore. Other annexations took place on March 11, 1935 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Indore, on June 14, 1951 establishing the bishopric of Sambalpur and on December 13, 1951 establishing the bishopric of Raigarh - Ambikapur.

On September 19, 1953, the Diocese of Nagpur was raised to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Nagpur was on May 8, 1955 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Amravati. For more territorial concessions were made on 16 January 1964 on the establishment of the Diocese of Pala and on 29 July 1968 on the establishment of the Apostolic Exarchate Chanda.

The Archdiocese of Nagpur comprises the districts of Bhandara and Nagpur in Maharashtra and Balaghat districts, Betul, Chhindwara and Seoni (except the Tehsil Lakhnadon ) in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
