Ecclesiastical Province of Paris

The Archdiocese of Paris (Latin: Archidioecesis Parisiensis ) is located in France Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church. Suffragan dioceses are Créteil, Evry -Corbeil -Essonnes, Meaux, Nanterre, Pontoise, Saint- Denis and Versailles.

History

Paris is a bishopric since the 3rd century. As the first bishop of Paris is Dionysius. During the Middle Ages, the diocese was part of the ecclesiastical province of Sens. On October 20, 1622 Paris was raised to an archbishopric. First Archbishop of Paris, Jean- François de Gondi ( 1622-1654 ).

Cardinal Jean- Marie Lustiger (1981-2005) was the first Archbishop of Paris Jewish origin, and was regarded as one of the leaders of French Catholicism. So he organized protests against the planned from the Socialist Minister of Education Alain Savary school reform, which would have threatened the existence of the (usually Catholic ) private schools and was involved in the reconciliation between Jews and Christians.
