Roman Catholicism in Cameroon

The Roman Catholic Church in Cameroon is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

History

1884 Cameroon became a German colony. The Catholic Church in Cameroon was founded in the late 19th century by German Pallottiner. The first Bishop of Cameroon was the German Heinrich Pallotinermissionar Vieter SAC, and was succeeded by Francis Hennemann SAC. Then the Pallottinermission was expanded in Cameroon on. As a result of World War I in 1916, all German missionaries were expelled from Cameroon. French Holy Ghost Fathers took over in 1923 the French-speaking part of Cameroon, the Mill Hill missionaries took over the English-speaking part as a mission field.

Pope John Paul II visited Cameroon in 1985 and 1995. Pope Benedict XVI. has visited Cameroon and Angola in March 2009.

Church

In Cameroon, are about 25 % of the total members of the Catholic Church, therefore, 4.65 million Catholics. There are 24 dioceses and archdioceses which are joined together in the Episcopal Conference of Cameroon ( " Conférence Episcopale Nationale du Cameroun " CENC ).
