Roman Catholicism in Haiti

The Roman Catholic Church in Haiti is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

Organization

80 % of Haitians are Catholics. The largest diocese, Port -au -Prince, is among 2.851 million Catholics. It is followed by the Archdiocese of Cap- Haïtien with 794,000 and the Diocese of Les Gonaïves with 791 558 Catholics. The Roman Catholic Church in Haiti is divided into two archdioceses and eight belonging to suffragan dioceses.

Chairman of the Haitian Episcopal Conference (CEH ) is Archbishop Louis Kébreau SDB. Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti is Bernardito Cleopas Auza.

Pope John Paul II visited Haiti in 1983.

2010 Haiti earthquake

When the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010 Joseph Serge Miot, also seven diocesan priests, 31 seminarians and at least 31 religious men and women, in the opinion of Nuncio Bernardito Cleopas Auza of 14 February 2010, in addition to the Archbishop of Port-au -Prince, died. Furthermore, 60 and thus destroyed the majority of parish churches and community facilities in the capital.
