Rome–Civitacastellana–Viterbo railway

The railway line Roma - Viterbo Flaminio is a 105 km, according to other sources 102 km long standard gauge, electrically operated railway, the public transport is used exclusively in the north of Rome.

The railway was built along the Via Flaminia on the route of the former ferrovia delle Cave, a standard gauge steam-powered railway material, the building material of the brick and gravel pits on the Via Flaminia transported for the construction of the neighborhood of Prati. It was built as an interurban tram, privately funded, a project of the Società Romana Ferrovie del Nord ( SRFN ) first with a track gauge 1000 mm and was electrified with 6500 volts, 25 hertz single phase. As Roma Nord it started its operations in 1906 from Rome to Civita Castellana. 1913, the extension was opened to Viterbo. The operation Rome - Viterbo was referred to as " street railway " ( " ferrotranvia "). The travel time of about five hours for 104 km, however, was seen in the first few years of operation to be too slow, so that the revenue barely covered operating costs.

1932, the line was converted to standard gauge spurt, partially straightened and opened as a railway Rome -Civita Castellana with a new tunnel route in the city area between Piazzale Flaminio and Acqua Acetosa who replaced here trams operating in the streets of Rome. The web has now operated as railway, which ends at the Piazza del Popolo in Roma Flaminio station.

After the Second World War ( Flaminio ) Grottarossa a suburban traffic was set up on the route Rome.

1970 bought today Metropolitana di Roma SpA the railway line from the SRFN and operates today. It is the longest distance and has approximately 45,000 travelers per day. Offered is an S -Bahn -like traffic. You should be modernized in order to further expand this type of transport services.
