Roomba

Roomba is a robot vacuum cleaner series from iRobot with several models. As Staubsaugroboter the models belong to the service robots. Roomba was introduced in 2002 and until August 2012 sold over 8 million copies. Roomba is the world's most successful service robot.

Operation

The models differ in features and performance. The model 581 has a remote control, three "Virtual Wall Lighthouses " and can be launched from a clock at a certain time. Up to four rooms can be successively controlled via the Lighthouses, with a total of 80 square meters can be cleaned. After the cleaning process, the device searches for the way back to its charging station and it automatically docks and then loads its battery back on the basis of Lighthouses. Other models are designed for only 40 sqm, have no remote control, operate without Lighthouses and have no timing. All models are designed for unattended autonomous operation. All models from model 400 up have a documented programming interface.

In April 2009, Roomba was inducted into the Robot Hall of Fame.
