Rory O'Hanlon

Rory O'Hanlon (Irish Ruairí Ó hAnnluain, born February 7, 1934 in Dublin) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician, former Minister and Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish Parliament.

Biography

O'Hanlon was educated at University College Dublin and worked as a general practitioner after studying medicine and Doctor of Medicine.

His political career began in 1973 when he ran as the candidate of the Fianna Fáil in a special election for a vacant seat in Dáil Éireann. He succeeded, however until the next regular election in 1977 to be elected to the Dáil. There he represents since the interests of the constituency Cavan - Monaghan.

From October to December 1982, he was briefly Minister of State to the Minister for Social Welfare. The third cabinet of Charles J. Haughey Taoiseach he belonged first of 10 March 1987 to 14 November 1991 as Minister of Health. Then he was to the end of Haugheys tenure on 11 February 1992 Minister of the Environment.

In July 1997, he was elected by the House as Deputy Chairman ( Leas - Cheann Comhairle ). Of 6 June 2002 to 14 June 2007, he was finally in place of Séamus Pattison Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of Dáil Éireann. In this role he was also deputy chairman of the British -Irish Parliamentary Association (British - Irish Inter- Parliamentary Body) and Chairman of the Committee on Arrangements and privileges ( Committee on Procedure and Privileges ). Ceann Comhairle successor as was his party colleague John O'Donoghue.

He is married and has four sons and two daughters.
