The Royal Military Academy (nl: Koninklijke Militaire School, fr: École royale militaire ) is a university of the Belgian Army in Brussels. You currently forms the whole of the Belgian officer corps (air and land power, marine and medical corps ).

History

The Royal Military Academy was founded in 1834 by General Jean polytechnique Chapelié founded on the model of the French École at the suggestion of King Leopold I..

Organization

The Royal Military Academy is the only public university in Belgium, which is not maintained by the communities, but directly from the federal government. Executing agency is the Ministry of Defence.

It is located in the buildings of the architect Henri Maquet and Henri van Dievoet in the Cinquantenaire and has about 800 students, who are taught in French and Dutch. It is headed by Major General Harry Vindevogel since 2008.

Each year the students and officers march past the university on July 21 on the occasion of the Belgian National Day before the king.

Faculties

There are two faculties,

  • The Polytechnic School (POL ) and
  • The Faculty of Social and Military Sciences ( SSMW ).

Courses

2003/ 04 presented the university courses of study in the course of the Bologna process on the Bachelor-Master 's degrees to. The courses take five years and are funded entirely by the state.

The Polytechnic Faculty trains graduate engineers. The Faculty of Social and Military Sciences awards two Masters in Social and Military Sciences: Management & weapon systems and defense and political science. Furthermore, the university also trains officers of the medical corps, technical engineers and officers of the auxiliary corps.

Besides Belgian officer cadets and students from Luxembourg and from North and Central Africa are trained.
