Rožaje

Rožaje (Cyrillic Рожаје; Albanian Rozhaj / -a) is a small town with 9100 inhabitants in the north-eastern tip of Montenegro. It is located near the border between Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo at about 1015 m altitude. The town is also the center of Opština Rožaje with 22,700 inhabitants. The river Ibar, which rises here, and the 2403 m high Hajla are known natural beauty of the region.

Location

A large village Rožaje is from the rest of Montenegro isolated by up to 1755 meters high mountain range. To the south Rožaje is shielded by the mountains Hajla and Mokra Gora from Kosovo. The large parish includes the uppermost part of the Ibar valley, which is why Rožaje is open only in an easterly direction to Central Serbia. However Rožaje is connected by a tunnel with the rest of Montenegro. The passing through the tunnel main road M-2 leads to the location on the other side of the mountain range Berane city. In the opposite direction the city is connected by this main street with Kosovska Mitrovica in Kosovo and Novi Pazar with a fork. Another road leads over a 1795 meter pass to Peć in Kosovo. During the Ottoman Empire, the city was part of the historic region of Sandzak of Novi Pazar.

Population

At the 2011 census the municipality had 22,964 inhabitants Rožaje, of which 19,269 ( 83.91 %) than Bosniaks, 1158 ( 5.04 %) than Albanians in 1044 (4.55 %) as an ethnic Muslims, 822 ( 3.58 %) designated as Serbs and 401 (1.75 %) and Montenegrins. The Albanians of Rožaje speak the gegischen dialect of Albanian.

Economy

The community lives mainly from the wood industry and the retail trade.

Attractions

The most important attraction is the Ganića Kula ( tower of the Ganići ), which was built in the early 19th century. Other landmarks are the Kurtagić Mosque ( built on the orders of Sultan Murat II in 1697 ) and the Kučan Mosque ( built in 1830 ).
