Rudolf Brestel

Rudolf Brestel ( born May 16, 1816 in Vienna, † March 3, 1881 ) was an Austrian politician.

Rudolf was Brestel 1836-1840 assistant at the Vienna Observatory and then taught at the Universities of Vienna and Olomouc mathematics. In 1848 he was elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament in the Austrian Reichstag. After the suppression of the revolution of 1848/1849 he lost his position as a professor and was politically persecuted. He was active in journalism and in 1856 participated as secretary to the establishment of the Credit-Anstalt for trade and commerce. In 1861 he was elected to the state parliament of Lower Austria, from 1864 to 1881 he was a member of the Austrian parliament. From December 30, 1867 ( Appointed by Emperor Franz Joseph I. ) to the resignation on April 4, 1870, effective April 12, he was Finance Minister in the so-called civil Ministry, the first Prime Minister Auersperg was. In this role, he managed to reduce by tax increase and conversion of government debt to the pension debt, the deficit.

1883 in Vienna Ottakring ( 16th district ) was named the Brestelgasse after him.
