Rudolf Gwalther

Rudolf Gwalther, Rudolf Gualther or Rudolf Walther ( born November 9, 1519 Zurich, † December 25, 1586 in Zurich ) was a Reformed theologian and reformer. He was the successor of Heinrich Bullinger as Antistes the Zurich church.

Life

Gwalther was born the son of a carpenter and builder Andreas Gwalther and lost him early, his mother was Adelheid hard field. Thereupon, Heinrich Bullinger adopted the boy. He attended schools in Kappel am Albis, Basel, Strasbourg, Lausanne and Marburg and studied except theology, mathematics and poetry. In Lausanne he learned French and Italian. Landgrave Philip of Hesse took the gifted students in 1541 with the Regensburg Colloquy. When he returned to Zurich, he received the pastorate at Zurich parish church of St. Peter as the successor of Leo Jud. Now he's married daughter Regula Zwingli.

He was an inspiring and popular preacher. His sermons and biblical considerations have often been printed and read a lot. That he was looking for as Ulrich Zwingli's son-in to preserve its heritage, followed the same theological direction and provided for the distribution of works of Zwingli in the Roman world through Latin translations, is explicable.

For Bullinger, he was a valuable employee in the line of the Zurich church and in his widely ramified correspondence. Apart from historical accounts, he wrote numerous translations and delivered Latin seals and spiritual songs. On request Bullinger he was in 1575 elected as his successor to Antistes on Grossmünsterplatz. For ten years he led this difficult office until he fell into mental derangement 1585.

Family

He married in 1541 Regula Zwingli ( 1524-1565 ), the daughter of the reformer Ulrich Zwingli. After the death of his first wife he married in 1565 Anna Blarer, the daughter of the mayor of Constance Thomas Blarer. He had six children, including:
