Rudolf Hildebrand

Heinrich Rudolf Hildebrand ( born March 13, 1824 in Leipzig, † October 28, 1894 ) was a German German scholar, teacher, educator and linguist.

Life

Hildebrand was born in 1824 in Leipzig. He was the son of the typesetter Henry Hildebrand ( died 1850) and his wife Amalia Hildebrand, born Porges (died 1867). His father was originally from the Arnstadt, and moved for professional reasons to Leipzig. He worked as a factor in the local Brockhaus printing. He belonged to the so-called labor aristocracy.

Prior to his enrollment he received from his father private lessons in Latin and French. From 1829 to 1836 he studied at the Naumann 's educational establishment, a private school for the poorer classes in Obernaundorf. In 1836 he moved to St. Thomas School at Leipzig, where he graduated from high school in 1843 took off.

First he attended from 1843 lectures by Maurice William Drobisch, Christian Wilhelm Niedner, Johann Christian Friedrich cloth and Christian Hermann Weisse in the fields of theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. From 1844 to 1848 he studied Classical and German Philology. Besides Niedner, cloth and white, were among his professors Gustav Hartenstein, Moriz Haupt and Gottfried Hermann. In 1848, he dropped the paper on Walther von der Vogelweide in the main from his state examination.

He then became corrector and translator at the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung in Leipzig. From 1848 to 1868, he worked as a teacher for German, Latin, Ancient Greek, geography and history at the St. Thomas School. In addition, he taught at the German book dealer school in Leipzig. From 1852 to 1890 he worked at the German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm with. On the recommendation of his former professor's head, he was in 1852 corrector. In 1856 he was commissioned to design the letter K of the fifth band. After the death of Wilhelm Grimm in 1859, he devoted himself to the letter G, the fourth volume in the first division. Along with Karl Weigand from Giessen, he was finally, after the death of the other brother Jacob 1863 Publisher. Prior to his almost complete blindness 1890, he presented his work on a dictionary.

In 1867, he founded the German literature circle " Vogelweide " in Leipzig. In 1868 he was an associate professor of German language and German literature at the University of Leipzig. He rejected calls in 1873 from the University Prague, Greifswald and Rostock. A year later he was appointed full Professor of Modern German Literature and Language from the 16th to the 19th century. He sat in his teaching and in particular a focus in the Nibelungenlied, in works of Walther von der Vogelweide, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the minstrelsy, the folk song of German grammar and etymology and the words and language research. He dedicated also Meier Helmbrecht, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Johann Gottfried Herder, Gudrun, Friedrich Schiller, the history of language, vocabulary research and the teaching of German Research. In Leipzig, he founded the first Germanic Institute. Because of illness from gout he could keep his lecture in 1888 only from home. Hildebrand lost with increasing age, his eyesight and died in 1894 at the age of 70 years in Leipzig.

He was friends with the Austrian writer Franz Michael Felder.

Honors

Hildebrand was in 1884 honored by the King of Saxony to the House Order of the diamond crown II class. Since 1892 he is honorary member of the Modern Language Association of America. In his honor, carries a primary school in Berlin -Marie village, a special school in Dusseldorf and two high schools in Markham and Stendal his name.

Student

His students included Georg Berlit, Wilhelm Braune, Konrad Burdach, Otto Lyon, Gustav Roethe and Karl Wolfskehl.
