Rudolf von Jaksch

Rudolf von Jaksch (* July 16, 1855 in Royal Vineyards, Bohemia, † January 8, 1947 nade in Hracholusky Mží, Czechoslovakia), was an Austrian internist, pediatrician and professor.

Life and work

Rudolf von Jaksch, son of Anton von Jaksch internist, studied medicine at the Charles University in Prague and the Kaiser- Wilhelms- University of Strasbourg. In 1878 he received his doctorate in Prague for Dr. med. Subsequently, he was briefly an assistant to Edwin Klebs, Alfred Pribram and from 1879 to 1881 with his father. In 1882 he became assistant to Hermann Nothnagel at the University of Vienna, where he habilitated in a year later for pathology. Since 1884 lecturer, he followed the call of the University of Graz in 1887 to a professorship of Pediatrics. He was Head of the University Children's Hospital.

From 1889 Jaksch looked at Karl- Ferdinand University in Prague as a professor of internal medicine and director of Children's Hospital. At his instance a modern hospital was planned, which was inaugurated in 1899. In the years 1894/95 and 1910/11, he served as Dean of the Medical Faculty and in 1908 /09 as rector of the university. In 1890 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Jaksch is the author and co-author of several medical standard works. His first book, published in 1887 Clinical diagnosis of internal diseases by means of bacteriological, chemical and microscopic examination methods was translated in the 6th edition of 1907 in six languages. The anemia pseudoleucaemica infantum (1889 ) bears his name.

Jaksch married in 1882 in Vienna by Adele Haerdtl ( 1867-1944 ), with whom he had one son and three daughters.
