Life

About life Rustichello da Pisa is little known. Year of birth and date of death are unknown. The period of his activity is limited to about 1272-1299.

It is believed that Rustichello toured around England and France in 1270, there learned the French language and the English crown prince, the future King Edward I, whose crusade to the Holy Land accompanied in the years 1270-1272. He wrote several novels of chivalry in French, including in 1275, probably the earliest, written by an Italian Arthurian romance. It is believed that he only amassed to other literary sources and compiled.

The posterity Rustichello was especially known as a co-author of Marco Polo's autobiographical travelogue "Il Milione ".

It is possible that he got during a conflict between the maritime republics of Pisa and Genoa, during the Battle of Meloria ( 1284) captive of the Genoese. As the Venetian Marco Polo after the Battle of Curzola ( September 8, 1298 ) was to his fellow prisoners between the fleets of Venice and Genoa, Rustichello wrote between September 1298 and July 1299 down the travelogues of Marco Polo in the used as a prison Palazzo San Giorgio.

It is unclear what proportion Rustichello contributed to the joint work. Whether Rustichello received only an oral dictation, the travelogue of loose narratives written independently or could at least partially rely on written records Polos, is controversial. From Marco Polo no handwritten travel records are maintained, although it is reported that he asked his father, Niccolò Polo from prison out to send him records and papers to Genoa. It is doubted that Marco Polo the Old French language in which the book was written, ever understand.

It is certain that Rustichello, as an experienced writer, at least on the stylistic design of the travel reports of the merchant Marco Polo, played a decisive role. On Rustichellos original based about 150 other manuscripts.
