Saanen (French Gessenay ) is a municipality and the main town in the Obersimmental -Saanen of the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

For the municipality of Saanen consists of the villages ( Bäuert called ): Saanen as main and Amtsort, Abländschen, bites, Ebnit, mines, land, Gstaad, Kalberhöni, Saanenmöser, Schönried and Turbach.

Geography

South of Saanen are the communities Gsteig ( bordering the canton of Valais and situated further south than Airolo ) and Lauenen. Saanen itself bordered on the west and north by the cantons of Vaud and Fribourg, and on the east by the municipalities Simmental Gstaad, Zweisimmen, St. Stephan and Lenk im Simmental. The highest point is 2,542 meters high Giferhorn, the deepest point is 985 meters to the Sarine river in the gorge Rütti.

Village of Saanen

The main town of the municipality of Saanen is the eponymous village of Saanen. It is 3 km from Gstaad, and borders the Canton of Vaud. The mountain Vanel between Saanen and Rougemont forms the cantonal and linguistic border.

The name of the village comes from the same name and the largest river in the vicinity of the Sarine. Around the 5th century migrated Burgundy, and in the 8th century brought Alemanni, who immigrated from Simmental ago, the German language into Saanental. Politically, Saanen to the 900 first mentioned county Ogo, later called Gruyères.

In Saanen is also one of the most beautiful churches in the canton of Bern, Maurice Church. She almost burned down in the early 20th century, but you could save fortunately. Then it was rebuilt again and neatly renovated.

Name

The French name is attested since 1228, initially as Gissinai. This evidence is so even older than the first German-language document Saanen. There are different interpretations, for example, derivations of personal names ( Gissi, Getti or similar) in conjunction with Latin endings for field names ( - acum and etum ). Other derivations are based on a Latinization of Wyssenöye (literally Weisungsaue or grass that will be voted on on policy transfers). Popular etymological interpretations point to some extent also on Wyssenöye back, but in the interpretation of white lawn, but also the derivation of a local corridor designation is called casting.

Policy

The voting shares of the parties at the national elections of 2011 were: SVP 51.4 %, 15.1 % BDP, FDP 11.1 %, SP 5.9 %, 4.2 % glp, GPS 3.5 %, 2.9 % EDU, EPP 2.7 %, CVP 1.0 %.

Health service

Saanen decreed to November 2012 establishing a public hospital. Health care was reorganized with intent to cost optimization. After the closure of the supply of the population is carried out by upgraded local service providers ( primary care physicians and group practices ) and the two hospitals Simmen and Thun of hospital composite STS ( Spital Thun Simmental ).

Traffic

Saanen has a station on the railway line Montreux- Lenk im Simmental, which is operated by the Montreux-Bernese Oberland Railway. At this station scenes were of Who Will Take the Bride, one of the most successful Bollywood films rotated.

Saanen has an airfield that is used for a variety of air sports activities.
