Said Saif Asaad

Said Saif Asaad (Arabic أسعد سعيد سيف, DMG As ʿ ad Sa ʿ īd Saif, born May 31, 1979 in Bulgaria as Angel Popov ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter who competed for Qatar in 1999.

Sporting career

Popov launched internationally for the first time at the 1998 Junior World Championships in Sofia. In the Middle heavyweight to 94 kg, it took 360.0 kg ( 160.0 / 200.0 kg ) in third place. For the Junior European Championship in the same year he was able to improve on 365.0 kg ( 165.0 / 200.0 kg ), which was enough here for fourth place. His last competition for his native Bulgaria denied Popov of the 1999 Junior World Championships in Savannah. 1999 bought by the Qatar Weightlifting Federation eight Bulgarian weightlifters for a million dollars, among them Angel Popov, who would now compete under the name Said Saif Asaad for the Gulf state. After a one year break from competition Asaad occurred in the Asian Games 2002 in Busan and won with 417.5 kg ( 192.5 / 225.0 kg ) of gold in front of Cui Wenhua with 415.0 kg and the Olympic champion Tavakoli 400.0 kg. The 2003 World Championships in Vancouver decided he could with 422.5 kg ( 195.0 / 227.5 kg ) for themselves.

With the power of previous Asaad could be counted among the medal favorites for his second Olympic Games in Athens 2004. After 192.5 kg in the snatch he resigned, possibly injury or psychologically determined, on the third attempt, after three times but could bring in a valid attempt at thrusting. The winner Dmitri Berestov scored 425.0 kg.
