Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère

Saint -Léon- sur -Vézère is a municipality with 414 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the French region of Aquitaine in the Dordogne. It is classified as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

In the village on the Vézère between Montignac and Les Eyzies there is an entity belonging to the oldest in the Périgord Romanesque church from the 12th century, moreover, the Manoir de la Salle in the 14th century as well as the Château de Clérans from the 16th century.

Architecture

The flagstone covered parish church once belonged to a small Benedictine priory and stands on the foundations of a Gallo- Roman villa. Inside the cruciform church closes with an arched by a half-dome choir and two apses; in the apse and in the south chapel are seen Romanesque frescoes. From the outside, the three apses and the square tower of the building form an architecturally balanced unit.

The Manoir de la Salle is located at the entrance of the village, in a park right next to the thoroughfare. The small castle was built of fieldstone and still boast a square, covered with stone slabs Donjon from the period. The private Château de Clérans is directly on the Vézère and shows high roofs and ornate ridge. A high wall leaves a narrow path along the river bank.
