Saint-Saturnin, Puy-de-Dôme

Saint- Saturnin is a commune in the Auvergne region in the Puy -de- Dôme in the arrondissement of Clermont- Ferrand in the canton of Saint- Amant- Tallende. It is classified as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

Geography

Saint- Saturnin is located about 20 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand in the valley of the river Monne opens into the Veyre a little further down. The municipality of 16.86 square kilometers located on 460-890 meters above sea level and is one of 1022 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). History

Saint- Saturnin was the seat of the lords of La Tour d' Auvergne, of which even the heavily fortified castle Saint- Saturnin testifies. With its narrow streets of the town has preserved its medieval flair and therefore attracted many artists who settled here.

  • The Church of St- Saturnin is one of the six main churches of the Auvergnat Romanesque. It was built in the first half of the 12th century in light Arkose sandstone and dark lava stone and has its octagonal bell tower survived the French Revolution without prejudice, so that restoration of other churches could take them to the model. The Ostpartie the church forms a Auvergnat pyramid, in which the massif barlong is integrated. Inside are capitals from lava rock, a Romanesque statue of Mary, a colored aggregate Pietà in the crypt of Christ and a main from the 15th century, wooden sculptures of the 18th century.

  • The castle of Saint- Saturnin, medieval fortification from the 13th century, with triple Walling, battlements and towers. The facade dates from the Renaissance period.
  • Musée du peintre Madrassi, Museum of the painter and illustrator Ludovic Lucien Madrassi (1881-1956)
  • Near the Benedictine Abbey of Notre- Dame de Randol, built 1970-1980, with architecturally very watchable modern abbey church with stained glass windows
