Salacgrīva

Salacgrīva ( German: Salis Warnemunde, Estonian: Salatsi ) is a port city in the north of Latvia and the center of the county of the same name.

History

The area was settled by the Livs. From 1207 was at the mouth of Salaca a trading place of the Archbishop of Riga, which was secured from 1226 with a castle. After 1561, the area belonged to Poland - Lithuania. In the wars with Sweden, the castle was destroyed. Once the location in 1721 part of the Russian Empire was, died the Livonian language here slowly. 1870, the river bed was deepened and opened a port. This led to the establishment of industrial and craft enterprises. However, the importance Salacgrīvas sank as 1903, a port was opened in the neighboring Ainaži also, who received in 1912 a railway connection ( narrow-gauge ).

Only after the Second World War, the population increased again after a large fish processing plant was built.
