Salamat Region

Salamat is a region of Chad, corresponding to the former prefecture of the same name. Its capital is Am Timan. The region has about 261,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Salamat has an area of 63,000 km ², is located in the southeast of the country, bordering the Central African Republic. Named the region is named after the river Salamat. In the region of the Ramsar site Plaines d' inondation is the Bahr Salamat et Aouk, which is one of the world's largest protected areas of this kind.

Economy

The population in Salamat lives mainly on subsistence farming, animal husbandry, fishery and cultivation of millet and peanuts.

The region also is the National Park Zakouma as a tourist destination.
