Salassi

The Salassians ( Salassians ) were an Alpine people in what is now northwestern Italy. They were either Celts or keltisierte Ligurians and inhabited the valley of Duria ( Dora Baltea ). There were rich gold mines and gold-washings. After initial difficulties, the Roman consul Appius Claudius Pulcher 143 BC defeated the Salassians. 100 BC, the Roman colony Eporedia (now Ivrea ) established in their field. Emperor Augustus sent Aulus Terentius 25 BC Varro Murena against long been rebellious against Roman rule Salassians. Varro Murena destroyed all the people - 36,000 people, including 8,000 weapons capability - largely by transplanted survivors sometimes in distant countries, partly sold into slavery. The leading of southwest Gaul to Italy Alpine passes were secured from now. Later, Augustus founded at the location of Varro Murenas main camp during the Salasserkrieges the Roman colony of Augusta Praetoria ( Aosta today ).
