Salles-sur-l'Hers

Salles- sur -l'Hers is a southern French village with 635 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Location

Salles- sur -l'Hers lies on the River Hers in the heart of Lauragais at an altitude of about 220 meters above sea level. inst and about 58 km ( driving distance ) north- west of Carcassonne and about 18 kilometers south-west of Castelnaudary.

Demographics

In the 19th century the place had always 900-1200 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture led to a significant decline since the number of inhabitants.

Economy

The surroundings of the town is still dominated by agriculture, which in the late Middle Ages and early modern times mainly on the cultivation of woad ( pastel) concentrated. The import of indigo led from the 18th century to a gradual economic decline; the farmers had to return to the 'normal' agriculture. In the late 20th century, tourism has been added in the form of apartment rentals ( gîtes ) as an economic factor.

Attractions

  • The small medieval parish church of Salles was rebuilt after destruction during the sectarian clashes between Catholics and Protestants ( Huguenots wars) in the 17th century again. The most striking component of the nave church is accompanied by lateral turrets bell gable above the otherwise completely unadorned western facade. Its triangular design provides space for six free-swinging bell; he was already recognized in 1926 as a monument historique. The church of the neighboring village Payra -sur -l'Hers shows the scaled output.
  • From the destroyed in the religious wars of the 15th and 16th century castle still stands a tower ( donjon ), which is also recognized as a monument historique since 1948.
