Samborondón

Samborondon is a city in Ecuador and the capital of an eponymous canton of the province of Guayas in Ecuador. The Canton has about 45,000 inhabitants (of which around 12,000 in the capital ), and part of the urban agglomeration of Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador, which is also the capital of the province of Guayas.

Geography

The city samborondon located on the peninsula between the rivers La puntilla Babahoyo and Daule, which unite at this point to the Guayas. On the other side of the river is Guayaquil. Between Guayaquil and samborondon is the bridge of National Unity; both about five minutes by car ( the access is prohibited for pedestrians ) apart. This has meant that most residents Samborondóns work in Guayaquil.

Origin of the name

About the names circulate two theories: one stating the name so can be derived from the Saint Brendan, whose name in Spanish San Borondón. In Spain and consequently in Latin America, the colonial period often places were named after him. The other, according to the name dates back to a dark-skinned slave named Bartolomé samborondon that should have come with the settlers Fermín de Asiain to 1655 in the area and was the only black person around. The name is considered as a contraction of the words " Zambo / Sambo " and " Rendón ," the former being on African ancestry and the latter refer to a Spanish surname.

History

Official date applies Samborondons May 24, 1776. IN this time, there were a chapel and a bell, which is now in the City Museum of Guayaquil. The area was mainly inhabited by indigenous populations of the coastal region, Cayapas and Tsáchilas. As Guayaquil became independent in 1820, was initially samborondon 1822 setup as a canton of the Free Province of Guayaquil, but by their connection to Gran Colombia and later Ecuador reintegrated as a parish of the canton of Guayaquil. 1829 Simón Bolívar stayed for 34 days in the barracks in El Buijo, on the territory of today's canton samborondon, on which had been during the Wars of Independence a few years earlier operations center by Antonio José de Sucre. This was on June 27, 1829 ceasefire agreement between Guayaquil and Gran Colombia and the Peruvian troops who besieged the city for six months, signed. On 31 October 1955, the parish was then raised to the canton of the Republic of Ecuador.

Samborondon today

The city

Today, the city samborondon on La puntilla consists primarily known as home of prominent and wealthy inhabitants of Guayaquil (lives here, among other Álvaro Noboa ). It mainly consists of a main road ( Via a samborondon ) with expensive gated communities ( urbanizaciones cerradas ) on both sides, although to be built in recent years, not only for members of the upper class, but also increasingly for middle class families gated communities. Locally there are also several schools, two Catholic and several evangelical churches, a private hospital, opened in 2008, a private university and two shopping centers according to the American model with food court and cinemas. Also, the Parque Histórico de Guayaquil, a zoo and botanical garden for the local fauna and flora with colonial replicas of prominent buildings in the city of Guayaquil is located in samborondon. The Parque Histórico is one of the main attractions of the city of Guayaquil.

The rural part of the canton samborondon

In contrast to the city samborondon are the rural parts of the canton, which are summarized in the parish of Tarifa, embossed poor and rural. Its inhabitants live mainly on rice cultivation and animal husbandry. Therefore, the Canton samborondon is a prime example of the inequality of income and wealth distribution in Ecuador. The Canton samborondon bordered to the north by the Canton Urbina Jado, on the west by Daule and Guayaquil, on the south by Durán and Yaguachi and east also to Yaguachi and in the extreme northeast of the province of Los Ríos.
