Samuel Baeck

Samuel Baeck ( born April 1, 1834 in Kromau, Moravia, † May 16 1912 in Lissa, Posen) was a rabbi and historian.

Life

In 1853 he put in Pressburg his Abitur, he studied the Talmud academies in Mikulov and Pressburg, then at the University of Vienna Orientalia and philosophy, received his doctorate in 1856 in Leipzig ( The Civilization of the ancient Indians as compared with the culture of the Hebrews ), 1857 Rabbi in Šafov ( Schaffa ), was a rabbi since 1860 in Ceska Lipa ( Czech Lipa, Northern Bohemia ) and since 1864 rabbis and religious teachers in Leszno ( Lissa ), where he worked 48 years.

Samuel Baeck was the son of Rabbi Baeck Nathan (born 1810, died after 1869 ) and the father of Leo Baeck.

Work

He was a staff member at the assembly plant Winter Wishes ( The Jewish literature since the completion of the canon ) and wrote among others The story of the Jewish people and its literature from the Babylonian Exile up to the present ( Lissa in 1878, 3rd ed Frankfurt 1906 ).

Award

In 1903 he received the Prussian Red Eagle in recognition of his services.
