Samuel Charles Whitbread

Samuel Charles Whitbread (* February 16, 1796, † May 27 1879 in London) was a British politician.

Life

Samuel Charles Whitbread was the youngest son of Samuel Whitbread and his wife Elizabeth (nee Grey ). He grew up with an older brother, William Henry Whitbread, and two sister. He was related to the Earls Grey by his mother.

Samuel Charles Whitbread was taught from 1802 to 1807 by a private tutor. He then attended Eton College and St. John's College, University of Cambridge. In 1819 he was active as a partner in the brewery founded by her grandfather and his brother. At the general election in 1820 Whitbread was elected in the constituency of Middlesex in the House of Commons. This he was a member until 1830. From 1831 to 1832 he held the office of High Sheriff of Bedfordshire.

Whitbread was since 1849 a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. From 1857 to 1878 he served as treasurer of the society. In addition, he was in 1850 one of the founding members of the British Meteorological Society and in 1854 a Fellow of the Royal Society.

On June 28, 1824 he married Juliana Trevor († October 13, 1858 ), the daughter of Henry Otway Trevor. The marriage produced three sons and three daughters were born, including the later MP Samuel Whitbread. On February 18, 1868, he married Lady Mary Stephenson Keppel († September 20, 1884 ), the daughter of William Charles, 4th Earl of Albemarle and widow of Henry Frederick Stephenson.
