Children bedtime stories was read and is a tradition. Also radio stations picked up on it in the postwar period. Evening song was called Ilse Obrigs radio show in Berlin Radio. In the GDR radio the Sandman went for the first time on May 19, 1956 broadcast. In the German television (DFF ) of the evening greeting was from October 8, 1958 from it. The idea for a television Sandmann had the originator, changed from the DFF to the western Sender Freies Berlin. Together with the doll designer and author Johanna Schüppel developed Ilse magistrates early 1958 a simple little hand puppet. But before Sandman Greeting for children on December 1, 1959 appeared on the SFB - screen, the DFF sent on November 22, 1959 Sandman - the local television producers had learned from a Western Sandman. On October 29, 1962, the Western Sandman appeared in NDR, SFB and HR. Herbert K. Schulz it produced until 1985 in 80 episodes ( and about 1500 movies for bedtime stories ). In the 1960s and 1970s, the WDR shone in his third program also made a sandman broadcast.

For thirty years, there were two or three Sandman - one for the East and one or two for the West, where Gina Ruck- PAUQUET is responsible for many stories.

Sandman (DFF )

When the TV producers of the German Television in Berlin- Adlershof had heard under the former TV Chef Walter Heynowski from the plans of the CRC to produce a Sandman, had the set and costume designer Gerhard Behrendt the desired sandman figure in just two weeks with sophisticated animation technology bring about. The scenes and the numerous vehicles built Harald Serowski. The studio was up to the turn in Berlin- Mahlsdorf. After work, the Sandman fell asleep in the first episode on a street corner. The charisma of this scene - it was November 22 - led to protests from parents. Many children will have the Sandman in letters offered their beds.

In the summer of 1960 he received its final shape with 24 cm size and the typical beard until today. Then Sandman consequences emerged with varied content - scenes of everyday life, traveling the Sandman to distant (usually socialist ) countries and even into space ( among others traveled the Sandman with the Lunokhod on the moon ), fairy tale scenes but also scenes with strong political content, such as Visit the Sandman at the National people's Army, the border troops along the Oder and Neisse rivers or in the pioneer summer camp. The Sandman had a rich fleet with some very conventional, partly also very futuristic vehicles. As the Sandman in an episode arrived with a hot air balloon, however, there was anger and function, this episode was banned by the SED - two families two days earlier had fled with a homemade hot air balloon from Thuringia to Bavaria.

In all the stories of the East- Sandmännchens an imaging device or the like happens on the end of the greeting of the Sandman is zoomed in, bringing the daily bedtime story begins. Until a few years after German reunification, the word Abendgruß appeared at the beginning of history in school starting writing on the screen. At the end of each episode the Sandman scattered the children still a large handful of sleeping sand in the eye and waved goodbye.

Many of these figures were also found in other children's programs on GDR television as Visiting in Wonderland.

The evening greeting Stories - 1966 for the first time in color - followed a fixed weekly schedule. Some stories remained for decades always on the same day (for example, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday). In the 1980s, the weekly schedule of the stories presented like this:

The composer Wolfgang Richter was - in the great haste in which the Shipment was prepared - to the text (see talk page ), which derives from Walter Krumbach, said to be dictated on the phone and created the melody in just one evening in three hours. By experts, the song was considered too complicated for children and was therefore really only as a last resort.

The song had at times of television in the GDR before the evening greeting two, after the evening greeting a verse. In abbreviated form ( one stanza before the short film ), it applies to the present day use.

DFF 1 should be set and the frequencies of the two DFF now " DFF countries chain " hot program will be broadcast in the future. It should, and was carried to the viewing habits of the audience into account and also on the transmission date of the Sandman at 18:50 clock in the DFF countries chain and a second date in the ARD regional programs held on the frequencies of the former DFF 1. In many cases these program reduction was mistakenly interpreted as a complete setting of the DFF television broadcasts for autumn 1990. In addition, there were rumors of the SFB would cost reasons, dispense with the continuation of the Sandman and looking for a cheaper replacement. In addition, the Sandman fell on Sunday, 14 October 1990, because it was reported extensively on the same day, held the first elections in the five new federal states.

All this together sparked a wave of protests that were mainly directed against the radio officer of the DFF, Rudolf Mühlfenzl, straightened.
