Sannikov Land

Sannikov Land (Russian Земля Санникова ) is a phantom island in the Siberian Arctic Ocean.

First "discovered" it was from an expedition Yakov Sannikows and Matvei Gedenstroms. During their expedition to the mapping of the New Siberian Islands from 1808 to 1810, the two want Kotelny north of the island have discovered the new territory. While Eduard Toll's expedition confirmed the existence of the island in 1886 and 1893, after which the territory was not rediscovered until today.

Some scientists assume that the Sannikov Land once actually existed, but over time disappeared due to erosion. This regression can be observed in some New Siberian Islands. Thus, there is also a temporary land bridge between the island and the Faddejewski Kotelny Island, the so-called Bunge country. This land bridge consists of sand washes and rises only 8 meters above the sea level and is usually flooded. Most researchers assume, however, that Sannikov Land never actually existed in real terms.

Since Sannikov and Gedenstrom Sannikov Land described as ice, contributed their reports also essential to strengthen the now also recognized as false theory of the ice-free Arctic Ocean.

The Russian geologist and author Vladimir Obruchev animated the reports from 1922 to 1924 for writing the science fiction novel " The Sannikowland " (published 1926). The novel was filmed in 1972 in the Soviet Union under the direction of Albert Mkrtschjan as an adventure film for teenagers. The main role of Alexander Iliyin plays Vladislav Wazlawowitsch Dworschezki.
